About the school
A K-8 school in its own building, with no metal detectors. InsideSchools lists 8 pre-K and 8 3-K seats, and notes that pre-K teachers ask children to explain their reasoning as they solve problems. Being K-8 means no middle school application in 5th grade for families who want to stay.
After school and parents
The school hasn't posted its after-school provider or PTA contacts online. Call the main office at 212-677-4680 and ask for the parent coordinator, who can connect you with the PTA and after-school sign-up. We'll add details here as we confirm them.
Tours and admissions
All District 1 elementary schools are unzoned "schools of choice": you rank the schools you want on MySchools, and District 1 residents get priority. Children enter kindergarten in the calendar year they turn 5. See NYC Public Schools' kindergarten page and pre-K page for the official timeline, which is announced each fall.
For middle school grades, students already at P.S. 140 can continue; families applying from elsewhere use the middle school process on MySchools, which usually opens in early November.
Comparing schools
To compare schools, read the independent review on InsideSchools and the school's profile on MySchools. The best way to judge fit is a tour: watch a class, ask about class size, homework and how the school communicates with families.
For Grand Street co-op residents
Ridge Street is a few blocks north of Grand Street.
